The Swansea starlet whose volley stunned Leicester on Sunday insists it is wrong to say he is the next Ashley Williams – because he is simply the first Alfie Mawson.
Mawson, 23, signed for Swansea in a £5.5million deal shortly after Williams left for Everton in the summer.
The centre-back helped his club to a crucial win in their fight for survival on Sunday by scoring the opening goal against the Premier League champions and is starting to feel at home.
Swansea's Alfie Mawson has scored three goals in his last six matches for Paul Clement's side
‘I said to my best mate when I’m playing regularly I’ll start to feel like a Premier League player,’ Mawson said.
‘It’s a totally different ball game. I didn’t come here to try and fill Ashley’s shirt. I came here to be my own player.
‘I didn’t want to be the next Ashley Williams. I want to be the first Alfie Mawson.’
On him having three goals in Swansea's last six Premier League games, Mawson added: ‘It’s not bad, is it? I do like scoring goals.
Mawson roamed forward to open the scoring for Swansea with a wonderful volley
‘Any player would say the same and I’ve got a habit of popping up in the right place.’
It was Mawson’s dance moves in his celebration that also attracted attention, with it having already been dubbed the ‘Alfie Shuffle’ by some supporters.
That, he said, was down to his partner Beth.
‘It’s for my missus,’ Mawson said. ‘I started it a few years ago when I was at Wycombe and I said to her if I scored I’d do it for her.
'She means a lot to me, obviously so I thought I’d pull it out.’
