Jonathan Demands Reorganization of Sports Over Olympics Failure

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday ordered the total reorganisation of the nation’s sport sector as a result of the abysmal performance of Team Nigeria in the just-concluded London Olympics 2012.

 

Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, made this known while briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting.

 

In spite of about N2.3bn released for the London Games, Nigeria could not register her name on the medals’ table, making the games the worst one for the country about 20 years.

 

Maku said Jonathan, like every Nigerian, was not happy with the poor performance of the nation’s contingent, hence his directive for a comprehensive re-organisation of the sector.

 

The minister, however, did not give details of the President’s directive but added that the Federal Government would organise a national retreat to address the issues surrounding the nation’s poor sporting outings.

 

He promised that Nigerians would begin to see actions on the President’s directives in the next couple of months.

 

He said, “President Goodluck Jonathan today ordered for total and comprehensive re-organisation of the sporting sector, following the disappointing performances of Nigerian contingent to the London 2012 Olympics.

 

“The President accordingly directed for a national retreat which will involve state governments as well as the private sector to re-order priorities in the Nigerian sporting sector.

 

“He said what took place in London must be the beginning of a new momentum to place Nigerian sports at a level that will enable this country to return to the glory it is known for in the areas of sports.

 

“He also called for a new direction in sports management as well as funding and planning. He believes that what this nation needs at the moment is to take a sober look at what has happened and indeed change the scenario by working hard on all that we need to do to return the sporting sector to its past glory.”

 

Meanwhile, there are fears that the total overhaul ordered by the President may consume top officials of the National Sports Commission including the Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi.
