The Ogun state police command has apprehended a police corporal for allegedly shooting Likinyo Olumide, a commercial bus driver, to death.

Premium Times reports that the incident happened on Tuesday, October 6, at Sagamu tollgate, along Lagos-Benin Expressway.

Confirming the arrest of the policeman, Muyiwa Adejobi, the command public relations officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, stressed that the suspect would be brought to book.

‪Adejobi revealed that the divisional police officer of the area informed the commissioner of police that a corporal fired at the driver of a commercial vehicle.

‪”We therefore arrested the corporal, would make him face the full wrath of the law. We are going to treat the matter departmentally before he would be charged to court for proper prosecution.

‪”The command is not happy with the situation because we have not recorded that for a very long time.

‪”We assure the public and relatives of the deceased that justice would be done. We’ll have a meeting with them to know what the command can do to ensure a good relationship with the family, and also be with them in this time of trials. We want to assure them of justice,” he said.

Folake Egbeuwalo, one of the seven passengers of the bus, said that the incident happened at 9:45 pm on Tuesday, as they were coming from Lagos, where they went to buy some goods.

“When we reached Sagamu tollgate from Ilemagbo Island, we did not know that there were policemen on the road.

“They asked the driver to park and immediately he parked and came out of the car. The policeman then moved to the other side of the road and gunned him down instantly,” she said.

‪Egbeuwalo added that the police officers ran away when the man died. However, later they came back and took away the corpse.

The woman noted that all the passengers were so shocked that none of them could drive a car and slept on the high way.

Meanwhile, a younger brother to the deceased, Likinyo Solomon, said that Olumide had six children and a pregnant wife.

“I want to see the person that killed my brother and to know what actually happened before he was killed,” he said.

Briefing journalists, Balade Hassan, the assistant inspector general of police, zone 2, Balade Hassan, said:

“The regulation is clear and the constitution is clear about the right to life of all Nigerians. So, if anybody takes the life of anybody be it a policeman or civilian not as provided by the constitution, you will face the full wrath of the law.”

Earlier this week, six police officers were arrested at the Force Criminal Investigations Department Annex, Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos state, over the killing of 33-year-old Emmanuel Orimisan.
