'We are going to see,' Bilic said. 'I'm a big admirer of John, he is one of the best that ever played, not only in that position but in general. He won everything, he did everything and we are talking about an England captain, a true leader.

'We are pretty well covered in that position, we have quality and we have experience, but we will see. You never say never.'

Bilic takes his West Ham team to Everton on Saturday and with a nine-point cushion from the relegation zone, the 13th placed Hammers are aware that a victory could see them into the top half of the table.

Bilic will be boosted by the return of Winston Reid to his defence, but he is without the suspended Sam Byram and injured Andy Carroll.

'Winston is back from injury, that's good for us, he is one of the most important players for us. We are going to see if he is going to start but he has been in training this week. He looks good in training. It's a big boost for us.

'Andy Carroll is probably going to be fit for our next game.'
