Alisher Usmanov saw his £1billion takeover bid for Arsenal rejected by majority owner Stan Kroenke.

But who are Usmanov and Kroenke? Why did the Uzbek businessman make the bid and why are Arsenal so valuable? And what would it all mean for Arsene Wenger's future at the Emirates?

Sportsmail answers all of those questions and more in a handy guide to the ownership situation at the club.

Who is Alisher Usmanov?

Alisher Usmanov is a metals magnate from Uzbekistan, although he has primarily been based in Russia. He was the 37th-richest person in the world as of 2013 and the second richest in the UK circa 2014. His fortune is estimated to be worth $15.1bn (£11.5bn).

He owns 60 per cent of USM Holdings, which works in metals, mining, telecommunications, technology and media, along with a stake in Mail.ru, which is the largest internet provider in the Russian speaking world.

Usmanov is thought to be a close friend of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

What about Stan Kroenke?

Stan Kroenke is an American businessman who began his business life by founding the Kroenke Group in 1983, which focused on real estate. It built shopping centres and apartment buildings.

In 1974 he married Ann Walton, who is one of the heiresses to the Wal-Mart fortune. In 1995 his wealth increased when they inherited a stake in Wal-Mart Stores when James Walton, the co-founder of the company, passed away.

Kroenke then invested in several teams over the next 15 years, buying the St Louis Rams, the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche and a series of smaller sides.

Who are Arsenal currently owned by?

The club are currently split between Usmanov and majority shareholder Kroenke.

Kroenke owns 67.05 per cent of Arsenal's parent company, Arsenal Holdings PLC, while Usmanov has managed to acquire 30.05 over the past few years.

When did Kroenke first invest in Arsenal?

His MLS side the Colorado Rapids already had a link-up with Arsenal when he bought 9.9 per cent of the club from Granada Ventures in 2007.

Kroenke bought further shares, rising to 12.19 per cent that year. By 2008 he had control of the voting rights after purchasing 18,594 shares (29.9 per cent of the club).

He then reached 62.89 per cent ownership of the north London side by buying the segments of the club owned by Danny Fiszman and Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith.

And when did Usmanov buy into Arsenal?

The Uzbek-businessman bought 14.58 per cent in 2007 along with business partner and now-Everton owner Farhad Moshiri. That segment was sold by former vice-chairman David Dein.

They then increased their shareholding to 24 per cent in 2008 and there was speculation that their company Red and White Holdings would attempt to become the club's largest shareholder.

But while they increased their stake to 30 per cent - including buying shares from Scottish club Rangers - after Kroenke's own increase, they never made moves to push further until now.

What would a purchase mean for Arsene Wenger?

In the eyes of many fans, there is a distinct tie between Kroenke and Wenger remaining in the job.

At points it has seemed as though the American is more interested in profit than honours, but sources close to him denied those suggestions and said he was keen to see the side become Premier League winners.

Usmanov suggested the 'current politics of the club's management' were responsible for a lack of trophies in 2012 and criticised the sale of Robin van Persie the same year.

While it would not necessarily mean the end of Wenger, it would upset the apple cart slightly.

Why is the club worth so much money?

Because, like every Premier League side, it makes so much money. An offer to buy the entire club in 2011 from Kroenke valued it at £731M.

Since then, the value has skyrocketed. This is, in part, due to the Premier League's boosted broadcast revenue and the general increase in the value of clubs across the league.

But Arsenal are also no longer burdened by the cost of moving to the Emirates Stadium and are easily one of the most valuable clubs in the league.
