There is a mounted picture in Danny Talbot's living room that goes someway to explaining the frustrations of chasing Usain Bolt over the past decade.

The framed image is from the 200m at the World Championships in Beijing two years ago, which took some rather imaginative cropping by his mother to create a more desirable outcome.

'He was in lane six and I was in lane seven so I started just ahead of him,' said Talbot, who is part of a 4x100m relay squad that believes it can wreck Bolt's farewell party on Saturday night.

'I just hit it as fast as I could and for those 20 metres before he caught me, I thought, "I am beating him".

'Back home in Trowbridge my mum has a picture of that moment — me ahead of him. If a Martian walked in and looked at all the pictures they would think I was the greatest athlete of all time.'

It says everything about Bolt's years of dominance that in the eyes of the Jamaican's rivals, the end cannot come quickly enough, irrespective of their respect for what he has brought to the sport.

Talbot said: 'I was 16 when Bolt first won a medal at the worlds in 2007. I started athletics at 15. It's all I've grown up with.

'You get to a point where it is amazing racing him but it is boring being so far behind him.

'I have raced him five or six times now. The only way I can describe it is if you are in year seven and you are racing a sixth former. It feels like there is nothing you could do.

'Now, with his retirement, it's a good opportunity for someone new.'

In a desperately poor championships for the home team, the relay offers a solid opportunity with three sub-10sec runners in Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, CJ Ujah and Adam Gemili in the team.

Talbot said: 'I know in the relay we can run fast. It's the best relay team I've been involved in. We have guys who will make a difference.'

However, after the flops of six medal-free days, along came Robbie Grabarz on Friday with one that suggested Britain might have someone to get excited about.

The high jumper comfortably made it through to the final with a 2.31m clearance.

He said: 'A medal. That's what I'm here for. Anything else and I will be gutted.'

Tiffany Porter crashed out of the 100m hurdles after finishing sixth in her heat. She said: 'I'm so embarrassed to come here and run like that.'
