Success starts with IELTS

Let's start off with the main point - there is no such thing as a “dress code” for the IELTS speaking test. You have to look appropriate, but there are no written rules. However, we have some tips for you that will really come in handy.

We all know that usually, the first thing that is noticed about us is our clothes. You can make a good impression by putting on the right outfit. For example, people who are going to a job interview usually wear something classy that makes them look more professional and serious.

Another thing that we should take into consideration is the feeling. When you are wearing comfortable clothes, and you know that you look confident in them, then you will also FEEL confident! This is one of the most important things to remember when choosing clothes to wear to the IELTS speaking exam.

You also need to wear something that will be not only comfortable but which will make you relaxed as well. You should concentrate on the exam, not on the shirt or pants that are too tight, right?

The IELTS speaking exam will involve a lot of speaking (obviously) in front of the examiner. And you just have to make a good impression! You need to look serious, intelligent and ready!

We’ve established that you need to wear something that is comfortable, that will make you look serious and confident. But what will that be?

In order to get that “business casual” look, you will need to follow some tips:

1. Wear Trousers/Pants. They will help you to achieve that formal look. And slacks are quite comfortable as well. The best option is to wear (or buy) black slacks since they will go with almost everything. You can also choose another color, like dark blue or brown.

2. When it comes to shoes, choose wisely. For ladies, it is better not to wear high heels. We know that you love them and they are really beautiful, but you need to feel comfortable! Remember that the exam may take a while - do you want to suffer in those high heels? If you really want to wear something high, you can go with platform shoes.

You can also wear leggings and boots if the weather allows, as long as they are comfortable enough. If you are going with leggings, then choose a long shirt to get more "business casual" look.

For gentleman the option is easy - wear your formal shoes.

3. How about the top? Ladies, your option is a white blouse (without a cleavage). Gentlemen, it is a good idea to wear a collared shirt. You don't need to wear a bow tie, but it's a good idea to button up that shirt. The shirt will make you look more serious and professional!

4. A jacket on the top is optional. But remember - go with something classy. However, you can get creative with the jacket! Great tip for ladies - if you are going to wear black jeans or slacks, then go with a blue or yellow jacket. You will look both fashionable and professional.

5. Don't wear T-shirts, especially if they have images, glitter or text on them. You need to feel comfortable, but you also need to appear professional.

6. Forget about sweatpants. We know, they are super comfortable, but would you go to an important meeting in sweatpants? We don't think so.

7. You should not wear blue jeans. We are not saying that they are inappropriate, but it's hard to achieve that classy and professional look when you are wearing jeans. If you are insist on going with jeans, then choose a darker colour and make sure that they are not tight.

8. Ladies, you can also wear a skirt or a dress. If you are going with the first option, then look up some classic designs. And choose a dark colour - dark brown or black. As for the dress - classic, black, with no cleavage. It can be as a shirtwaist, high waist or drop waist. You can even use Coco Chanel as a reference! The length of both of them has to be at least to your knee. You want to look serious, right?

Tips for IELTS speaking test

World speaks IELTS

Now you know the dress code for IELTS interview, but you could use some tips! And don't worry, we have something that will help you successfully pass the IELTS exam.

1. Don't panic. The worst thing that can happen to you during the test is a panic attack. Stay calm and keep breathing. Remember - you are ready for the exam, and you know what to talk about. If you tend to get really nervous, drink some soothing tea before the exam. You will feel better.

2. Have some training before the exam. Ask your friends or relatives to listen to you and learn to talk a lot. You need to come up with new topics or new things to say about the same topic. If you don't have anybody who speaks English, then try and train in front of the mirror. Record your speech and listen to yourself. Write down the mistakes you’ve made and train more. You need to talk as much as possible during the exam.

3. Try to be spontaneous during your speech. The examiner has listened to a lot of people in his life, and he knows what to expect. Be unique and don’t say exactly the same things that you’ve learned in a textbook.

4. Usually, the examiner’s questions are predictable. Look up the questions that examiners tend to ask or talk about them with people who already took the exam. Practice your answers at home, record yourself and check your grammar. Just remember that even though the questions are predictable, they can differ. So be ready!

5. Listen carefully to the examiner’s questions. You need to understand them and be ready to answer. However, if you have some problems with understanding, don’t be afraid to ask for clarification.

6. Answer in full sentences. For example, don’t say only “Yes” or “No”. Also, don’t learn the prepared answers - as we said, the examiner knows what to expect, and if you tell him the prepared answer, he will change the question. Don’t search for the “prepared answers”, like “introduce yourself to IELTS speaking test”. You can look for some tips but don’t memorise the answer!

7. You have a unique personality, so express yourself! Show that you have an opinion and you are ready to express it.

8. Be honest. If you need to express a negative opinion about something, then do it. It’s easier to say what you really think than come up with something new.

IELTS Interview tips

Interview

The Interview can be considered as part of the exam and a lot of people might get quite nervous about it! We have some tips for yo, that will make your interview easier.

1. Don’t get too emotional. For example, let’s say that you decided to tell a funny short story that happened to you. When people are nervous, they tend to have the “nervous laugh”. Keep calm and laugh a little or just give a smile. It will help you to deal with the tension that you might feel during the exam.

2. Remember that the IELTS interview or the speaking test is not a job interview. You need to show your English skills, not job qualification!

3. Even if you have prepared answers for the interview, don’t memorise them. You will try to say the memorised answer, and you might get lost during the process. It’s better to improvise than get stuck.

There you have it - list of tips that will help you to pass the IELTS speaking test. Remember that there is no strict dress code for IELTS interview. You just need to look appropriate, like for a job interview, for example. And stay calm during the speaking exam - it is the most important thing that you must remember. Panic is not a helper. Train as much as possible to improve your confidence in your knowledge.
