It's nearly time for the talking to stop, with the hours ticking down as Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez's hotly-anticipated contest on the Las Vegas Strip moves ever closer.

In what is viewed by many as the most intriguing boxing match of the year, the ice cold Kazakh puncher and the flame-haired Mexican go head to head as two of the sport's biggest names put it all on the line.

v David Lemieux - Madison Square Garden, New York City - October 17, 2015 - won by TKO

This bout saw two heavy punchers meet in what promised to be an enthralling contest, with Golovkin using his jab expertly to open up Lemieux before finishing the job in round eight to add the Canadian's IBF title belt to the WBA one he already owned.

v Kell Brook - O2 Arena, London - September 10, 2016 - won by TKO

Sheffielder Brook made the jump from Welterweight to take on the fearsome punching of Golovkin and was made to pay with a stoppage in the fifth round. The Brit came out with a flourish and gave as good as he got in the early stages, before GGG showed his class to finish the job and leave Brook nursing a fractured eye socket.

v Daniel Jacobs - Madison Square Garden, New York City - March 18, 2017 - won by unanimous decision

Golovkin's most recent contest pushed him more than he has ever been pushed before, as he went all the way with his fellow knockout artist. He kept his beltsby going 115-112 on two judges' cards and 114-113 on the other, but a run of 24-straight victories inside the distance was over.

v Martin Murray - Salle des Etoiles, Monte Carlo - February 21, 2015 - won by TKO

Murray had an impressive record heading into the contest in Monte Carlo and last all the way until the penultimate round before the Kazakh's relentless punching power forced the stoppage.

Two years prior to meeting Golovkin, Geale had been a unified champion of the middleweight division but that didn't stop Golovkin from running riot and finishing the Australian inside three rounds.

CANELO ALVAREZ 

v Floyd Mayweather - MGM Grand, Las Vegas - September 14, 2013 - lost by majority decision 

The biggest occasion Canelo has faced also resulted in his one and only defeat, when a 23-year-old Alvarez took on Mayweather at the top of his game. He was given a boxing lesson at MGM Grand but there was controversy on the cards when one judge scored it a draw while another gave Mayweather a victory by six rounds.

v Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr - T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas - May 5, 2017 - won by unanimous decision

These two Mexican rivals met over the Cinco de Mayo weekend and pitted Canelo againt man born of boxing royalty, the son of the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez. There was plenty of needle in the build up, but when the talking stopped it was Alvarez who stood tall, dominating Chavez Jnr before sealing victory by unanimous decision.

v Miguel Cotto - Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas - November 21, 2015 - won by unanimous decision

The fight with Cotto represents arguably the Mexican's biggest victory and saw him claim the vacant WBC world middleweight title. The Mexican out-boxed a man 10 years his senior, cementing his place on the pound-for-pound list.

v Amir Khan - T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas - May 7, 2016 - won by KO

The bout with Khan saw the Brit step up two weight divisions to challenge for Canelo's belts, but it ended badly for him as he was knocked out in round six following a devastating right hand. After the fight, Alvarez invited Golovkin into the ring as the early seeds for this weekend's contest were sewn.

v Matthew Hatton - Honda Center, Anaheim CA - March 5, 2011 -won by unanimous decision

The night Alvarez first became a world champions will be one he remembers for the rest of his life. He was deducted a point for hitting after the break in round seven, but all three ringside judges scored the bout at 119-108 in favor of Alvarez as he took the vacant WBC world super welterweight title.
