Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo returned to his former club Sporting Lisbon on Saturday evening to a hero's welcome.

The former Manchester United forward sat out the final weekend of his five match ban for pushing a referee by catching up with old friends and familiar faces at the 50,000 capacity Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The 32-year-old - who was part of the club's youth sections from 1997 to 2002 before playing a season for the first team in 2002-03 - dropped in to see his old team play Tondela in Portugal's Primeira Liga.

Ronaldo, accompanied by girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez - who worked at a Gucci store in Madrid before they met, catching the eye of the star in the VIP area of a Dolce & Gabbana event more than a year ago - watched from the best seats in the house as Sporting summarily dispatched the minnows from the centre of the country 2-0.

Although the superstar - who has nearly 60 million followers on Twitter - returned to action by scoring twice against APOEL Nicosia in the Champions League at the Bernabeu on Wednesday he is still banned from La Liga until after Sunday's match with Real Sociedad.

Ronaldo also missed the return leg against Barcelona in the Supercopa as well as Real's first three league games of the season against Deportivo La Coruna, Valencia and Levante.

The Madeira-born forward decided to use his last weekend off from Spanish league action to visit his old stamping ground - as the fans sung his name during the game.

Despite departing for Manchester United as a teenager - after impressing against Sir Alex Ferguson's team in a pre-season match - Ronaldo is still revered at the Alvalade.

A decade after his departure from the club, in April 2013, Sporting honoured Ronaldo by selecting him to become their 100,000th member - and judging by the reception he received on Saturday night they still love him.
