Navy fully alert to protect Nigeria's unity - Chief of naval start vows after military declared IPOB a terrorist organization

Following the ongoing tension between the Nigerian military and members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the Nigerian Navy has said it is fully alert to protect Nigeria's unity.

The navy at the weekend said it has fully ready to protect Nigeria's internal security from the maritime environment.

Speaking during the Nigerian Navy's third quarter route march in Abuja, the chief of naval staff Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas said there was no cause for alarm over the ongoing crisis in the south east.

Ibas represented by the Chief of Naval Transformation, Rear Admiral Ibe Enenwo, said the route march was in line with the Nigerian Navy's efforts in ensure physical and mental fitness of personnel.

He said: “Even without tasking, we are fully deployed in internal security situations as required by the constitution and for our own peculiar environment, the maritime environment."

He however added that the march was not a parade in response to the threats posed by the IPOB or its members.

"It is a compulsory exercise unless of course, you are excused as a result of due process, maybe medically challenge or you are out of station," he said.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that the Nigerian military had declared the IPOB a terrorist organization.

The defence headquarters through its spokesperson John Eneche said analysis of the activities of the group show that it is a terrorist group.

He further warned parents and guardians to advise their wards against joining the group for their safety.
