Those saying the north is afraid of restructuring are liars; we have absolutely nothing to fear - Tambuwal declares

by 11/10/2017 16:29:00 0 comments 1 Views

- The governor of Sokoto state, Aminu Tambuwal, has stated that the North is not afraid of Nigeria’s restructuring

- According to Tambuwal, the idea that the north is against restructuring because it benefits most from the current state of things is circumscribed and patently false

- The governor however stressed that even though the north also wants Nigeria to be restructured, any decision taken must be inclusive and respect procedures and processes

Aminu Tambuwal, Executive Governor of Sokoto state, has announced that contrary to rumours, the north is not afraid of the restructuring of Nigeria, NAN reports.

The governor made his comments at the opening of a two-day conference by the Arewa Research & Development Project, in Kaduna state, on Wednesday, October 11.

NAIJ.com notes that Tambuwal’s statement comes against the backdrop of intense clamour by opinion leaders in Nigeria that the country should be restructured forthwith to make progress.

According to analysts, restructuring is a key demand being made by mainly geo-political zones in the southern part of the country for the advancement of Nigeria; but the north appears to be foot-dragging.

However, Tambuwal said the north was in no way afraid of the consequences of the restructuring of the country.

He stated: “The idea that the north is against restructuring because it benefits most from the current state of things is circumscribed and patently false.

“The fact that some people continue to parrot such a lie only helps to give credence to the flawed argument.

“Let us be clear: the north wants restructuring as much as anyone else.

“However, as a people we do not easily jump unto the bandwagon because we are always there for the long haul.

"We believe that any decision we take must be inclusive and respect procedures and processes so that the outcome is sustainable.”

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) weighed in again on the controversial issue of restructuring the country, and disclosed what it would not accept.

According to the group, while they acknowledge the persistent calls for Nigeria to be restructured, they would not be stampeded into adopting a grand design from other regions, which would not be in their best interest.
