LIVE: Watch astronauts return to Earth after six months on International Space Station

Nail-biting footage shows the Soyuz capsule containing three astronauts land in Kazakhstan from around 2pm .

Earlier today, three astronauts boarded a spacecraft docked to the International Space Station, closed the hatch, and then started their descent towards Earth.

Watch their nail biting journey as they enter the Earth's atmosphere and land in Kazakhstan from just before 2pm UK time - with estimated landing time at around 2.45pm.

Once the astronauts land they'll be taken to a medical tent for assessment before start their journeys home.

Samantha Cristoforetti, Terry Virts and Anton Shkaplerov have been on board the floating laboratory for six months.

In their time, they've been carrying out research, making repairs and documenting life in space in a series of fascinating social media posts.

Thanks to the crew, we now know about these weird devices used when going to the loo in space, how to cut hair in microgravity and what constitutes a 'cheeseburger' when you don't have access to McDonald's.

Check out the gallery below to see what the astronauts have been able to see from their unique vantage point in orbit.
