A community has been left outraged after an anti-violence campaigner was shot dead just outside his office.

Willie Cooper, 58, from Chicago was walking less than a block from his anti-violence organization on Saturday when someone inside a dark-colored vehicle shot him in the mouth and torso at about 4:15 pm, ABC 7 reported.

Cooper's body was slumped on the ground outside a liquor store when he was pronounced dead at 4:28 pm.

Family and friends are reeling after losing Cooper, one of 30 victims shot in Chicago this weekend.

'People are cold-hearted, how could you take someone's life? He helped everybody,' family member, Patricia Carter, told ABC.

'Since my dad passed away, he's been a man at the house in making sure me and my mom were okay.'

A friend and community member, Bamani Obadele, reflected on how Cooper had contributed to the community.

'Will is preventing violence,' he told the local station. 'Trying to find jobs for ex-offenders, working in this community. I almost want to name him the mayor of 95th Street.'

Among the ten killed - part of the 30 victims shot - this weekend was a ten-year-old boy, Gustavo Garcia, who was shot in the back while in a moving car with a 31-year-old man at about 11:13 pm.

The boy died in the hospital while the other victim is still in critical condition. Outside the hospital, the boy's father wailed before entering the hospital.

'My son is . . . ' he said, before pausing. 'I don't know.'

Police are yet to identify any suspects in both Cooper's and Garcia's cases.
