Kenya: K'ogalo Scent Top Eight Glory
Nairobi — Gor Mahia are fired up for Sunday's Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Top 8 final as they aspire to lift their first silverware since winning the last year's Football Kenya Limited Cup.
K'Ogalo face trophy-holders Ulinzi Stars at the Moi International Sports Centre, after taking league champions Tusker FC to the cleaners in the last four of the competition where the winner will take home Sh1m.
The final will be the chance for head coach Zdravko Logarusic to inspire more confidence in his squad as well as their passionate supporters in their bid for the final push in the KPL where they are placed fifth.
"We are a bit tired at the moment since we are participating in three tournaments concurrently but we deserve to be in this final which we are preparing for like any other league game.
"Its going to be a big match since Ulinzi are a strong opponent likely to cause an upset, we will try our best but we do have the confidence of been on top form and will make our supporters happy," Logarusic said after a training session on Friday.
K'Ogalo booked their final slot following a 4-0 aggregate win over Tusker while the military men saw off hard fighting Sony Sugar in a 3-2 in the corresponding tie.
The emphatic win over the champions coupled by the recent fine run in the KPL is likely to give Gor the slight edge over Ulinzi who beat them 1-0 in the league in April.
"These results are in the past, we are now looking forward to this fixture with the knowledge that we are strong and have been registering good results, with different players finding the net for us in our last matches.
"After we see who is in the best form to start, we will try to reduce mistakes on the field and from the bench too and let our players ability do the talking on the pitch," asserted Logarusic as he plots to unleash the lethal attacking pair of midfielder Rama Salim and striker Dan Sserenkuma.
The two have been instrumental in the resurgence of the club that was flirting with relegation during the first leg of the term that led to the hiring of the Croat.
"We have no major injury concerns for now, which is good for us since we are treating our opponent with a lot of respect expecting a challenging encounter.
The good run for the 'Green Army' has not been without hitches with reports that the tactician had issued a resignation threat last week after the players allowances following the Top 8 semi were delayed..
He is however, not remorseful for his actions that threw the club into disarray prompting the management to convene an urgent meeting to avoid an imminent fallout.
"On the field, we are the people in charge of the squad and have to be there for them in all aspects since I don't want to have some unhappy players on the pitch.
"I'm responsible for these boys, so when things are not right in my opinion as their leader I have to protect them so that I can expect the best from them in return," clarified Logarusic in regard to his quit threat before the semi against Tusker.
Ulinzi emerged winners in the 2011 edition after coming from behind to see off Western Stima 2-1 in the final played at the Nyayo Stadium and the match will be televised live on SuperSport 9 East.
