Mauricio Pellegrino says he accepts Southampton's decision to sack him as manager after only nine months in charge at the south coast club.

The Argentinian was appointed as Claude Puel's successor last June but Saints only managed to win five of their 30 Premier League games under his command.

A 3-0 defeat at relegation rivals Newcastle over the weekend left Southampton just one place and one point above the bottom three and Pellegrino's axing was confirmed on Monday.

In a statement published on Southampton's official website on Tuesday, Pellegrino said: 'From the beginning I tried to do my best every single day, I tried to give back to the club and tried to represent the club with pride.

'Some moments we managed this, some moments we couldn't, but we have been living a difficult season for many reasons. The manager is the face of a lot of decisions and actions, but I always tried to put the club first with my technical staff and the board behind me.

'I feel so sorry to leave the club in this situation, but when you don't get results I understand the decision the club has to take.'

The 46-year-old came under increasing pressure as the season progressed, with fans frustrated by his perceived defensive tactics and pundits accusing the players of not playing for him.

Despite not being able to push Southampton up the table, the former Liverpool defender feels the club will soon be moving in the right direction.

He added: "I am really happy with the hospitality of the people of Southampton and the respect you have shown me in every moment during this experience. The fans have been behind us even in difficult games and I am really grateful for your support in those situations.

"I have to say thanks to (Southampton chairman) Ralph (Krueger), to the board, all my technical staff and all the Southampton employees. Also to my players, who respected me in every single moment.

"I wish everyone all the best for the rest of the season, I have enjoyed an amazing experience and I know that Southampton has everything required to move forward."

Former Hull and Watford boss Marco Silva, himself axed by the Hornets earlier this season, is one of the contenders for the vacancy, along with ex-Saints boss Mark Hughes, who was sacked by Stoke during January.
