Atiku, other defectors can participate in presidential primaries - PDP

- The PDP called on more people to defect to the party

- It said all defectors will be allowed to participate in the party's primary election

- The opposition party amended its constitution to allow for their participation

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed that new defectors can participate in the party’s presidential primary election.

Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar defected to the party in 2017 and although he has not officially declared his intention, there is speculation that he would soon make his presidential ambition public.

The Punch reports that the national publicity secretary of the party, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan said new entrants will be allowed to test their popularities in the party’s primary elections.

He said: “We are not closing our doors to new entrants who want to contest the party’s presidential ticket. Our doors are open to them.

“We have amended our constitution to take care of their interest as well as those of other members. We are looking for credible people to fly our ticket in 2019.

“We have amended the constitution, which has now reduced the years that defectors can stay in the party before contesting election from two years to just six months.”

Meanwhile, Barrister Khaloma Mustapha, the special adviser on Inter-Governmental Affairs to Governor Muhammad Badaru of Jigawa state, called on Nigerians to continue to support President Muhammadu Buhari to enable him execute his laudable programmes.

NAN reports that he made the call in an interview with newsmen in Dutse on Wednesday, January 10.

He said the call was also necessary in order to enable his administration provide the much needed infrastructure for the development of the country.
