Just In: IGP moves in to reform SARS; approves audit of squad’s detention cells nationwide

An independent audit of detention cells of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) nationwide, has been approved by Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris.

The development follows a call for such action by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), The Cable reports.

NAIJ.com gathers that in a bid to “oversee human rights situation of detainees,” the Commission had requested access to cells in all Police commands and formations in the country.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the Lagos state command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), on Sunday, June 10, announced it had dismissed five out of 92 policemen tried for various offences in the first half of the year 2018.

Three of them were fired recently. The announcement came following a gruesome incident which happened at Chinese town in Ojota, Lagos state; with some SARS officers allegedly shooting a man they mistook for an internet fraudster.
