Ho, March.14, GNA - Madam Theresa Swanzy Baffoe, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Advisor, Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) has called on traditional rulers to lead the call for behavioral change to end open defecation.
She said most communities looked up to their traditional leaders and so it was important that chiefs owned the campaign against open defecation, backed with traditional sanctions.
Madam Swanzy Baffoe was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of a “Learning and Sharing Event” of the Department for International Development DFID Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene for All (SSH4A) in Ho, after bringing the project to an end in Jasikan.
She said the project, which received funding from the DFID was targeted at reaching 4.5 million people with access to improved sanitation and hygiene education in nine countries including Ghana.
The project ended last year December in Ghana and targeted 509,088 people in eight districts, including Jasikan.
Madam Swanzy Baffoe said a total of 41 communities in the Jasikan District were declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) within the period and 91 communities triggered to be conscious of their health, especially environmental cleanliness.
She said although the programme had ended, measures were in place to sustain the campaign and called on chiefs and opinion leaders to join the crusade against open defecation.
