Tamale, April 17, GNA - Chiefs and elders of 10 Mamprusi communities in the North Gonja District have declared their desire to be part of the proposed North East Region to be carved out of the Northern Region.

The communities include Lukula, Kutula, Kuchualim, Sakpega, Mempeasem, Kuldani ,Sakpala, Zooyiri, Bugsa and Sagya.

The chiefs and elders said being part of the proposed North East Region would bring development to their communities to improve the living standards of their people.

Mr Isaac Azindow, representative of the chiefs and elders of the communities, who read a statement on behalf of the chiefs at a press conference in Tamale, said their communities were underdeveloped making life unbearable for residents.

Mr Azindow said the communities had poor health and education infrastructure manned by inadequate personnel, adding they were also not connected to the national grid.

He said the communities requested to be part of the Mamprugu/Moaduri District when new districts were being created in 2012 but the request was ignored.

He, therefore, appealed to the Commission of Inquiry into the Creation of New Regions to consider their appeal and include their communities under the proposed North East Region.

The Mamprugu Traditional Authority petitioned the Commission of Inquiry on the Creation of New Regions to carve North East Region out of the Northern Region and the Commission had since held public hearings on the petition in the area.
